Delighted to moderate this exclusive fireside chat with Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, coordinating minister for social policies and chairman at the MAS and the National Jobs Council and OCBC Bank group CEO, Samuel Tsien and vice-chairman of the IBF Council and member of the National Jobs Council.
SM Tharman and Mr Tsien shared their insights on how financial institutions can work more closely with Job Development Partners such as the IBFSG – The Institute of Banking & Finance Singapore to better support #workforce transformation in the #financial sector as we move on an upward trajectory towards better, up-skilled jobs for employees in that industry.

SM emphasised how employers must be pre-emptive when it come to future job matching and pointed out that this process must be accompanied with customisation to ensure that all workers in the financial sector are moving on an upward plane and poised to grow alongside our ever changing economy.
We also discussed ways in which employers can overcome mindset barriers when hiring mature and mid-career workers. OCBC Bank had started its own workforce transformation journey and prepared its employees for inevitable change;
and I couldn’t agree more with Mr Tsien on his point that there must be strong cooperation between employer and employee during these times. If employees are wiling to re-train and have the right aptitude and attitude, then employers must have an open mind. He also highlighted that redeployment of employees into new roles must be skills-based rather than roles-based, in order to truly co-create more opportunities for our employees in the financial sector. Some very pertinent points indeed.

I really enjoyed the discussion and the pre and post-show chats with both my panelists. Thank you for an enriching and encouraging conversation.
