Knowing the profile of your audience is important in determining whether you use jargon or not. Too much technical terms and your message may be mired in obscurity if you’re addressing mostly non-industry attendees.

Providing a little preamble is fine but rambling on is a surefire way to lose the audience’s attention. Be concise and answer the question head-on, then follow up with an example / story to reinforce your key message.
