It’s not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it that matters.

Ever heard that one before?

Yes, i’m referring to ‘tone of voice’ and ‘body language’ in Public Speaking.

Our non-verbal cues account for about 55% of our overall presentation and first impressions, and this impacts our audience way more than our content. Most of the time people won’t remember the exact words we use or what was said, but they will remember how you made them feel; and so our tone of voice and our body language matter a great deal.

The right tone/ delivery helps us influence our audience positively, and can produce the desired results.

Here are top three ways we can use non-verbal cues more effectively:

Facial expression: It is crucial you look like you want to be there and want to engage with your audience so don’t forget to smile. <my coaching clients will know what tip i use ;P>

Eye contact: this is critical when presenting in person or virtually. Look down the lens of the camera if you are on zoom or teams. (not at the screens)   If you have a physical audience, scan the room in the shape of an “M” so you connect with different sections.

Pace: Rushing through a presentation loses your audience fast so slow down, think and relish the insights you’re sharing with them.
