“When you rethink the purpose of education, you start to develop a system that can contribute to human progress” -what a thought-provoking conversation I had with Raya Bidshari, Founder and CEO, School of Humanity.
As part of Credit Suisse’ the GameChangers #SheTalks series, I sat down with Raya to talk about how she’s transforming the future of education. The gap between the skills that were needed in the workplace and what she had learned during formal education prompted her to enter the education space. By creating a new curriculum, the School of Humanity paired students with ‘learning facilitators’ and ‘industry mentors’ to guide them on a path that speaks to their interests, assets and skillset – this replaces the traditional report card that denotes a student’s ability by a grade or a number – thus changing the education system to one that is future-focused and wisdom-based and geared for an emerging workforce. Learning beyond the confines of a traditional brick and mortar set up also gives young learners from low income backgrounds and developing regions access to incredible mentorships (and their networks) that can help close the wealth gaps in life.
