Jargon: defined by most dictionaries as ‘language used by a particular group of people, especially in their work, and which most other people do not understand.’
This was what we discussed in my recent media training session with a group of medical professionals.
#Jargon may make sense to those in similar industries but to the majority, it’s meaningless; while overly convoluted language makes spokespersons sound scripted and dated.
Winning messages and interviews are easily understandable, even if the subject matter is complex, and it takes good judgment to simplify a super complicated topic.
So remember this when you’re presenting to an audience next time — “SIMPLICITY GOES HAND IN HAND WITH CLARITY”.
And ask yourself this- who exactly is your audience?
Use language you would use with friends or family over a cuppa or a meal- it’s *MUCH* easier for your message to resonate that way. ??
